HEADS FISHING CLUB
Based in the beautiful Shoalhaven/Illawarra region and only 2 hours from Sydney, the Heads Fishing Club is a community-minded competition club. We promote Deep Sea, Estuary, Beach, and Rock fishing with a dedicated focus on teaching juniors and those new to the sport the true art of fishing.
Our club is built on a foundation of education and sustainability. We instill a deep respect for the ocean and its inhabitants through our catch-and-release promotions, ensuring our local waters are preserved for the future. Whether it's through our regular competitions or our community-focused events, we welcome everyone to experience the best of fishing in the heart of Shoalhaven Heads.
We have our monthly weigh-ins on the second Sunday of every month at Carters Corner off River Road, Shoalhaven Heads from 12:00pm to 4:00pm
Membership in the Heads Fishing Club gives you and your family access to regular fishing competitions, social events, and cash prize draws.
Member Benefits
Weigh-ins & Competitions: Weigh fish on official days to win prizes across Men's, Ladies, Boys, and Girls sections for Deepsea, Estuary, Beach, and Rock fishing.
Badge Draw: Win or grow a cash prize that increases by $50 each weigh-in up to a $500 maximum (you must attend to win).
Christmas Party: Enjoy a free BBQ, drinks, and a visit from Santa with gifts for the children.
Presentation Night: Celebrate seasonal fishing winners with complimentary food, drinks, and live music at the club's biggest annual event.
FISH OF THE MONTH
Our Fish of the Month list features a different species each month. The person who submits the largest catch of the specified species at the weigh-in wins a $50 voucher from McCallums Tackle World, South Nowra.

Fishing in Shoalhaven Heads

Beach
The beach fishing at Shoalhaven Heads is an all-round favourite for both locals and visitors. Quality whiting, flathead, and bream are some of the summer favourites. While mulloway, tailor, and Australian salmon are quite commonly caught during the rest of the year. Fresh bait such as pippies and beach worms are readily available to be caught. There are many access points to the beach, including the car park at the end of River Rd as well as the Shoalhaven Heads Surf Life Saving Club and the halfway track on Gerroa Rd.
Estuary
The river is known to fish well for flathead as well as mulloway, whiting, mullet, bream, luderick, and many other species. Again, fresh bait such as squirt worms and nippers are easily found. The river also has mud crabs, prawns, and the occasional blue swimmer crab when in season. There is an abundance of fishing locations where small boats can get out of the wind and continue to fish in the event of prevailing conditions.
Coastal Bar
Access to the ocean from Shoalhaven Heads is via the river, around Comerong Island, then over the Crookhaven Bar Crossing at the Shoalhaven River entrance. The journey is approximately 10km from Shoalhaven Heads by boat. Care should be taken when passing over the Comerong Island Ferry punt, and experience, safety equipment, and maritime advice should always be taken into consideration before crossing the Crookhaven Bar.

Deep Sea
The Shoalhaven Offshore Artificial Reef is located approximately 4.3km north-east of the Shoalhaven River entrance. This area produces snapper, mulloway, flathead, and kingfish during the right seasons. Details regarding the artificial reef can be found at: Shoalhaven Offshore Artificial Reef
Another popular offshore location is ‘The Banks’, located approximately 9 miles southeast of the river entrance. The Banks is known to hold a wide variety of reef fish including quality snapper, large flathead, kingfish, and an abundance of shark species. During the summer months, it is common for The Banks to hold black marlin, and sporadically in winter, yellowfin tuna has been known to come in close around this area. Extreme caution should be taken when fishing The Banks in south-easterly conditions – it is mapped as being treacherous at times.
The cliffs between Currarong and Jervis Bay are popular for both reef fishing and trolling, however, skippers should seek local knowledge and maritime advice before fishing such areas. There are numerous bomboras and rock shelfs scattered along these locations. Game Fishing
The Jervis Bay FAD is known to hold Mahi Mahi throughout the summer months as well as black and striped marlin. FAD locations can be found at this link: Fish Aggregating Devices
The run to the shelf is approximately 17 miles from the Shoalhaven River entrance. Throughout the winter months, yellowfin tuna, albacore, shark, and other pelagic fish are not uncommon, and structures such as the Kiama Canyons and the JB Canyons are well-known locations.
In the summer months, the grounds between The Banks and the shelf can hold good numbers of striped and black marlin. It is not uncommon for those who venture beyond the shelf to have blue marlin encounters.

Kids
Shoalhaven Heads provides an ideal location for juniors to explore the beach and estuary systems for fishing, crabbing, and bait collecting. With calm and protected waters to be found within both walking and boating distance, kids are easily entertained with an abundance of fishing spots to choose from.
The Carters Corner public wharf can be fished all year round for quality bream, whiting, estuary perch, and mulloway. Along the beach adjacent to River Road and Hay Avenue are also popular locations for chasing flathead. Pumping for a yabby or chasing soldier crabs can be done just about anywhere along the entire river system, and you’d be hard-pressed not to find live baits! Walking the sand flats on low tide is a popular activity for young ones casting soft plastics into the channels for good results.
Each October, the Heads Fishing Club runs a “Kids Gone Fishing Day” which introduces kids to fishing activities. Free rods, reels, brag mats, and other starter packages are usually handed out at this event. Keep an eye on the links below for event updates and more information.
